October 2020 – In celebration of the second annual CU Kind Day, the Illinois Credit Union League has called upon all Illinois credit unions to roll up their sleeves and give back to the communities they serve.

ICUL launched CU Kind Day in 2019 with the purpose of spreading kindness and generating awareness for the good work done by credit unions in their communities. On this day, over 20,000 people were positively impacted around the state. This demonstration of cooperation and outreach showed Illinois what the credit union difference looked like and how credit unions put their members and communities first.

On October 12, 2020, NuMark Credit Union participated by dedicating their day to supporting various charities and organizations. Some chose a charity or organization that they have previously supported, while many chose to bring awareness to a new one. NuMark staff donated $2,000. In total, over 50 charities have received over $5,000 to help their mission. Most of the charities/ organizations selected impacted children, animals, health or human rights in some way. They included the Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Center, Northern Illinois Food Bank, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Charity Water, Hopeful Tails, Boys and Girls Club, The Bridge Teen Center, American Cancer Society, United Negro College Fund, Wounded Warrior Project and more.

In addition, NuMark donated to the Orland Park based business, the Bridge Teen Center. The center has worked diligently to keep the youth engaged in meaningful activities during their free time. For the first CU Kind Day, NuMark committed to volunteering in the Bridge Thrift Store by sorting, stocking and preparing merchandise for sale. This year, in support of the center’s “Drive Out Bullying” initiative, NuMark sponsored the Bridge Thrift Store for a week.

Jessica Mellen, NuMark Credit Union VP of Operations states, “It feels great to participate in CU Kind Day while keeping our staff and communities safe! There is such a critical need. Knowing this donation is giving back to the same communities we serve in a tangible, meaningful manner is so personally fulfilling. Partnering with other Illinois credit unions to make a difference in the communities we serve is exactly why I love being a part of the credit union movement!”

By participating in CU Kind Day, we aim to show our communities how “people helping people” is at the heart of the credit union movement.
