Black Hills FCU Employees Sew 300 Protective Masks for Kids!

Rapid City, SD - September 29, 2020 – In partnership with Masks for Rapid City, crafty Black Hills FCU staff put their skills to work sewing nearly 300 cloth face masks for Rapid City Area Schools elementary students.
With school now underway, it is important to keep kids safe and provide them with reusable masks. Masks for Rapid City received a $25,000 grant from the John T. Vucurevich Foundation to purchase Batik fabric (best for making healthcare masks), thread, and other items necessary to create kits to make the needed facemasks. They had the supplies; they just needed to find people to sew the masks.
While some BHFCU volunteers were seasoned sewers, others were novices learning to sew for the first time. “I saw this as an opportunity to help others in our community and also to learn a new skill. There is so much more that goes into sewing than I expected,” said Rachel Lere, learning and performance specialist.
Masks for Rapid City is a community-led initiative coordinated by Western Dakota Tech in collaboration with the West River Area Health Education Center.
