SAN DIEGO, Calif., (August 13, 2020) - Kids face many hardships—school supplies should not be one of them. That’s why San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®) has partnered with the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and iHeartMedia radio stations in support of Live Well San Diego to collect school supplies for students experiencing homelessness. And this year, many more parents and students are facing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, so the need is even greater! Donations began July 1 and as of August 13 the total amount donated is more than $111,000 which includes a generous match of $20,000 from the Danna Foundation and $5,000 from Blue Shield of California. With continued community support, SDCCU hopes to reach $125,000 by the end of August to help many more students receive new school supplies this fall.

“Thanks to the generous outpouring of support from our community, and generous donors like the Danna Foundation and Blue Shield, thousands of students in need throughout San Diego will be more prepared for the start of this school year with their own new supplies. We are so grateful for our continued partnership with SDCCU that helps make this happen each year!” said Susie Terry, coordinator, homeless liaison foster youth and homeless education services at San Diego County Office of Education.

More than 22,000 school-age children were identified as homeless during the last school year. Homelessness for school-age children can mean living in a shelter, sharing a residence with multiple families, living in a car or trailer in San Diego County or sharing a room in an apartment with relatives. Homelessness is not limited to urban, downtown San Diego—it affects suburban school districts all over the county.

“We truly appreciate everyone who has stepped up to donate to make the start of school a bit easier for students already struggling with too much. We are proud to once again partner with the San Diego County Office of Education and iHeartMedia, and are grateful to organizations like the Danna Foundation and their contributions that help make a big difference in the lives of homeless students throughout the county,” said Teresa Campbell, SDCCU president and CEO.

Monetary donations will be accepted online through August 31. Donation amounts can vary; $20 provides a filled backpack for an elementary school student, $25 provides a filled backpack for a secondary student, $250 provides a case of backpacks for elementary students, and $300 provides a case of backpacks for secondary students.
