WESTBROOK, ME – March 5, 2020 - The Maine Credit Union League joined representatives from Good Shepherd Food Bank at its Hampden Distribution Center, to present the organization a check for $30,000 to support its Hampden facility. In 2018, Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger pledged $100,000 to support the new facility’s renovation and expansion plans. Thursday’s donation to Good Shepherd Food Bank is the final installment of that commitment.

“Thanks to Good Shepherd Food Bank’s Hampden Distribution Center, more Mainers will have access to healthy, nutritious meals,” said Todd Mason, President/CEO of the Maine Credit Union League. “Our credit union network cares deeply about ending hunger in Maine and I am pleased we had a small role in helping this incredibly worthy endeavor come to fruition. I know Good Shepherd Food Bank’s presence in this area will have a lasting impact.”

In 2015, Good Shepherd Food Bank purchased the former Bangor Daily News printing center for its central and northern Maine food distribution operations. To better accommodate its needs, the Hampden facility underwent an expansive renovation which was completed last fall. The building’s food packing area where goods are sorted is named the Maine’s Credit Unions’ Food Packing Area.

“We are beyond grateful for the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger,” said Kristen Miale, President of Good Shepherd Food Bank. “The Food Bank serves the entire state. We needed a facility in the greater Bangor region that could help us more efficiently and effectively serve central, northern, and downeast Maine. These areas have some of the highest food insecurity rates in all of New England. The Hannaford Center, our Hampden-based facility, enables us to have the capacity to distribute an additional 10 million meals per year by working with our community partners to get the food to where it is needed.”

Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $9.4 million, including a record-breaking $832,332.62 raised in 2019. For more information about the Campaign, visit: https://mainecreditunions.org/endinghunger/
