(SALT LAKE CITY, UT – March 4, 2020) – The Security Service Federal Credit Union Charitable Foundation is helping medically uninsured people attain care by donating $5,000 to Maliheh Free Clinic. The nonprofit clinic works to reverse the cycle of poverty and suffering created by poor health, by providing free, quality medical care to low income and uninsured Utah families. The donation will be used to purchase an EKG machine to replace an aging one currently used.
“As the primary care provider for over 5,000 individuals from the Wasatch Front, last year we logged 16,000 patient visits,” said Jeanie Ashby, executive director for the Maliheh Free Clinic. “The generous donation allows us to purchase an EKG machine, a vital need to providing medical services to those who are unable to afford insurance.”
Frequently used by the primary care medical providers of the clinic and their volunteer cardiologist, the EKG machine is one of the clinic’s main tools needed to diagnose cardiac problems.
“The volunteers at the Maliheh Free Clinic bring hope and healing to thousands of patients in need of medical care,” explained Ben Wiseman, senior vice president of member service—Mountain West Region for Security Service Federal Credit Union. “This service is at the heart of what the Security Service Charitable Foundation sets out to support. We look forward to seeing the continued positive effects the Maliheh Free Clinic will have on individuals and families.”
The Maliheh Free Clinic opened in 2005 by Khosrow Semnani, Dr. Mansoor Emam, and a group of emergency room physicians and nurses who understood the critical need for free health care services for the uninsured and working poor in the community. The clinic has been funded 100% by donations since its opening. The clinic estimates that time spent by volunteers helping patients and working in other aspects of the clinic’s operation equates to more than $1 million each year in free services.
