(SAN ANTONIO, TX – February 12, 2020) – The Security Service Charitable Foundation is donating $5,600 to Respite Care of San Antonio (RCSA). The donation will be used to install a handicap access ramp at the organization’s H-E-B Family Respite Home.
“Children with disabilities are nearly four times more likely to be abused or neglected than their non-disabled peers,” said Larry Mejia, chief executive officer for Respite Care of San Antonio. “This is why respite care is so important for parents and caregivers. It reduces their stress, improves parental coping skills, decreases social isolation, and strengthens families. We’re so thankful for this donation which is allowing us to serve even more families.”
RCSA serves approximately 400 children annually through shelters, full-time daycare, and respite services. Two thirds of these children come from low-income households and families. Oftentimes, RCSA’s unique programs are the only services available for children with complex medical conditions.
“We are delighted to provide funding for a handicap accessible ramp at RCSA's H-E-B Family Respite Home,” said Jay Winslow, executive vice president and chief information officer for Security Service Federal Credit Union and Respite Care board member. “When it comes to medically fragile children and those with special needs, sometimes it’s small things like being able to safely enter and exit a building that can make a world of difference.”
Respite Care of San Antonio was founded in 1987 to provide support for families caring for a child or loved one with developmental disabilities. Respite Care expanded its mission in 1997 to provide care for children with special needs from throughout Texas who have been taken into protective custody as a result of abuse and neglect.
