MIDLAND, MI - January 28, 2020 – For the third consecutive year, Dow Chemical Employees’ Credit Union (dcecu.org) is working to help ensure local families have stocked cupboards this winter. From Feb. 3 through 28, DCECU is collecting food and personal care items to be divided among organizations in Bay, Gladwin, Midland and Saginaw counties that distribute resources to community members.

“Our goal in conducting this annual donation drive is to help local families keep food on the table and personal care necessities in the bathroom cabinet,” said DCECU Executive Assistant to the CEO Susan Phillips, who organizes the monthlong event. “In the first two years, we collected a total of about 6,500 items – including nearly 4,000 in 2019 – and we hope to continue building on that success to help even more of our neighbors in 2020.”

Organizations benefiting from the drive are Safe Harbor Kitchen in Bay City, Midland’s Open Door, Greater Midland Coleman Family Center, Helping Hands Mission in Beaverton and the Ecumenical Food Pantry in Saginaw.

Saginaw-based nonprofit Hidden Harvest is providing DCECU with boxes for the collection of items. At the conclusion of the donation drive, Hidden Harvest will retrieve some of the donations from DCECU for transport to Safe Harbor, while DCECU representatives will deliver donated items to the other four organizations.

While each week of the four-week drive features specific items that are being sought, all donations are welcomed. Contributions can be dropped off at the credit union, which is located at 600 E. Lyon Rd. in Midland.

The weekly schedule of featured items for collection is as follows:

  • Week of Feb. 3: Canned soups; toilet paper

  • Week of Feb. 10: Canned fruit; toothpaste

  • Week of Feb. 17: Canned vegetables; shampoo

  • Week of Feb. 24: Canned meats (e.g., tuna, corned beef, chicken, etc.); stick deodorant
