MONTGOMERY, AL (January 22, 2020) – On January 16, MAX held its 17th Annual MAX Community Reception.  The MAX Community Reception is an annual event that brings together business, political, and community leaders to celebrate community successes and recognize organizations and individuals who have made a significant difference in the quality of life in Central and East Alabama.

MAX honored The Montgomery Zoo for their efforts in contributing to a better River Region Community. Committed to teaching others about animals and conservation efforts, the Zoo offers various educational programs that can be adapted to meet a variety of different age groups on or off-site, as well as volunteer and internship opportunities. With more than 500 animals on-site, the Zoo offers a fun and educational experience for all. Along with all things wildlife, the Zoo is also open to the community to reserve for birthday parties, corporate events, fundraisers, and weddings.

In 2018, the Zoo launched its partnership with KultureCity and its Sensory Initiative to make the Zoo a friendlier place for guests with Sensory Processing Disorders, such as Autism, PTSD, Parkinson’s Disease, and many others. The program allows visitors with Sensory Processing Disorders to have access to Sensory Bags that include noise-canceling headphones, toys, and weighted lap pads. In implementing this initiative, all Zoo staff members completed training to increase their understanding of Sensory Processing Disorders to better serve their visitors.

Previous recipients of the MAX Community Achievement Award include the Montgomery Area Nontraditional Equestrians or MANE, Alabama Wildlife Federation, Central Alabama Sports Commission, Montgomery Chamber Convention and Visitor Bureau, Hope Inspired Ministries, Valiant Cross Academy, and Baptist Health.
