GRIFFITH, IN - January 16, 2020 – United Federal Credit Union (United) was proud to donate $1,105 to the Griffith Police Department to help with the purchase of their new K-9 officer, Deno.
Deno was born in the Czech Republic and is a 1 ½ year old German Shepherd. He was purchased from International K-9 College out of West Palm Beach, Florida. He underwent months of training before being turned over to Corporal Kevin Strbjak. The two have been training on police duties since November including narcotic detection, tracking operations, aggression control, and other police-related disciplines.
“We are thrilled to be able to help our local law enforcement expand their K-9 Unit,” said Griffith Branch Manager, Sylvia Torbica. “Adding Deno to the police department means so much not only to the protection of our community, but also to the safety of the officers who patrol with him.”
In addition to United’s donation, other corporate and community donors helped contribute funds for a combined total of $9,605.
Deno officially became the second K-9 of the Griffith Police K-9 Program on December 20, 2019 when he made his first patrol. Deno will work different shifts than his senior K-9 “Gino”, doubling the K-9 capabilities of the Griffith Police Department.
