ZibellAlyssaAshleySan Bernardino Valley College student Alyssa Ashley Zibell is the 2013 recipient of CAL Center Credit Unions Thomas L. Wagner Scholarship program. The Ontario, CA-based credit union presented an $800 scholarship to Zibell, 20, of Grand Terrace. She plans to transfer in the fall to California State University, San Bernardino, and double major in psychology and education. As part of her application, she had to write an essay of 2,000 words or less explaining her educational goals and why credit unions are unique. Zibell admits to mulling over a number of career choices, including becoming a college professor and teaching psychology or creative writing, but knows education is important. "Through the help of credit unions, I can also create a great financial future for myself along the way," she wrote. "Like credit unions, I want to help people and give back to the community. In our ever-changing economy, credit unions and education will forever be two of the greatest resources we have." "I am very thankful to have been a part of the CAL Center Credit Union scholarship," she said upon hearing the news she was this years recipient. Since 1992, CAL Center Credit Union has been investing in the future of the credit union movement through its Thomas L. Wagner scholarship program. The award is weighted with 65 percent based on the content of the essay and 35 percent based on the GPA of the student. In addition to the essay, applicants must be a member or child of a member of the credit union; be a high-school senior or full-time student of a higher learning institution; and submit school transcripts. The scholarship was named after long-time California Center Credit Union board member/treasurer Thomas L. Wagner, who retired from the board after more than 30 years of service. Incorporated in 1967, CAL Center Credit Union has $9 million in assets and 1,700 members. It serves employees and their families of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues; CU Direct Lending; Richard Myles Johnson Foundation; Western CUNA Management School; CO-OP Financial Services; and staff of organizations maintaining an office at the Empire Lakes Business Center in Rancho Cucamonga, where CCCU once was headquartered.
