Cornerstone Credit Union hosted the 6th annual WREX Freeport Food Drive at their Freeport facility on Friday, November 8, 2019. WREX-TV Channel 13 did live broadcasts throughout the day, starting in their 5am news show through the 6pm newscast This local effort began in 2014 when WREX became aware that some food pantries were at risk of closing their doors due to lack of food. Those Freeport pantries were able to keep their doors open because of the community's response to the food drive, and now it's an annual event.

This was the third year the drive was held at Cornerstone, and the donations have increased year after year. 2019 brought the most donations ever received, with well over two tons of food and over $3,000 in monetary contributions, including a corporate donation of $1,000 presented by Cornerstone Credit Union. Six local pantries received an equal share of the total donations.  “We were overwhelmed by the greater Freeport community’s generosity. People helping people is the credit union motto, and the WREX Food Drive is the epitome of that mission. Thanks to everyone who gave to this year’s successful effort,” commented Lorna Cote, Cornerstone Credit Union Marketing Director. “We are proud to partner with WREX to fight hunger in the local community.”
