SANTA FE New Mexico, October 24, 2019— Del Norte Credit Union (DNCU) reached out to our communities for inspirational accounts from Breast Cancer Survivors willing to share their stories and help spread awareness for the month of October. We are humbled to share Melanie’s journey, as she stands strong with the honest truth about the reality of battling and overcoming this disease.

Melanie, 53 years old, has been Breast Cancer free for 14 years.

Her journey began back in 2005. Due to her higher risk factors that included a family history of cancer, she went in for a baseline mammogram and they discovered a lump.  Melanie met with her primary care physician and almost did not mention it out of fear that it was her imagination or that it was nothing serious.  However, Melanie felt the need to listen to her instincts and speak up. At 39, she was a single mother to her then 10-year-old son.

“We know our bodies. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Be Your Own Advocate.”  -Melanie

Soon after diagnosis, Melanie began chemotherapy treatments and responded well.  In 2006, she proceeded to have a series of related surgeries. Upon recovery from those surgeries, she started radiation therapy. After these treatments, Melanie began her journey into recovery.

Melanie’s parents provided strong support during and after her surgeries, and throughout her recovery. Melanie has offered to share her story in the hope that those currently battling this disease can find the strength and resolve to continue their battle and spread awareness about the importance of early detection.

“Remember the importance of becoming your own advocate and taking care of YOU.

I am a survivor. “    –Melanie
