ST. GEORGE, UT  – The Security Service Federal Credit Union Charitable Foundation is aiding in food security for Utah residents by donating $10,000 to Switchpoint Community Resource Center. Funding will be to purchase a refrigerated truck that will pick up donated food at stores throughout Southern Utah, ultimately allowing an additional 300 people to be fed each week.

Switchpoint serves 4,200 individuals each year by providing an emergency shelter, food pantry, soup kitchen, community garden, job training, and individualized case management. The services support people on their journey to self-sufficiency and can reduce time spent in homelessness.

“In creating a plan to fight poverty, it needs to be comprehensive,” said Carol Hollowell, executive director of Switchpoint. “Ensuring people have healthy meals is an important first step. The refrigerated food truck made possible by this donation will allow us to pick up additional food items and feed even more people.”

Switchpoint believes clients need to earn what they receive and provides opportunities to volunteer and develop job skills.  Options for service include their on-site emergency food pantry; nearby thrift store; and doggy daycare, Bed ‘n’ Biscuits.

“After touring Switchpoint’s food pantry and assisting with fundraising efforts, I’ve seen the direct impact they have on thousands of people who are struggling with hunger and homelessness,” said Ben Wiseman, senior vice president of member service—Mountain West Region for Security Service Federal Credit Union. “Helping Switchpoint maximize the impact they have on the communities we serve is an honor.”

Switchpoint empowers homeless families and individuals in Southern Utah by addressing the underlying causes of poverty. They have created a one-stop haven that can reduce the length of time in homelessness by offering resources, tools, and a comprehensive case management plan.
