Minnetonka, Minnesota – At Mill City a Division of City & County Credit Union, we believe in empowering our community to do more. To actively live out this mission, Mill City hosts ‘Making the Greater Good Even Greater’ – a competition held twice a year to reward organizations for making a difference in the communities in which we serve.

Local small businesses and non-profits are nominated to enter the contest by members and people within the community. Once nominations are accepted, a Facebook voting contest is held to determine the winning small business and non-profit making the biggest impact in our community. The two winning organizations are awarded a $2,000 donation to put towards continuing their impact in the community.

In true excitement, Mill City is honored to recognize Ruby’s Pantry as the non-profit winner and Friedman’s Department Stores as the small business winner for the 2019 Greater Good competition.

About Ruby’s Pantry Founded in 2003, Ruby’s Pantry serves families of all denominations and backgrounds in rural areas in Minnesota and Wisconsin. They partner with local faith, community or civic organizations to host Pop-Up Pantry distributions once a month at one of 75 designated sites. This food bank is different than a standard food shelf. Ruby’s Pantry reaches communities where they live by hosting pop-up locations, meeting community members where they live. Currently, over 11,000 volunteers are involved monthly and Pop-Up Pantry sites donating over 125,000 hours annually.

“Because Ruby’s Pantry is funded entirely through donations, these funds will continue to help the program offer emergency assistance to local families through food donations at one of our Pop-Up Pantry locations,” Tracy Breault, Ruby’s Pantry Marketing Specialist, explained.

About Friedman’s Department Stores The experience at Friedman’s Department Stores is still as tailored as it was in the 1920s. However, you wouldn’t know it by the wide variety of hip footwear they now carry today including Nike, Adidas, Converse, Reebok, Puma, New Balance and Perry Ellis. Since its beginning, Friedman’s has enjoyed giving back to the community with their annual back to school event, where they partner with the YMCA and local schools to provide children who are in need a pair of shoes.

Sue Friedman, Owner of Friedman’s Department Stores, explained, “This $2,000 donation will be going towards our back-to-school giveaway. Children in need will get a backpack full of school supplies and a pair of shoes.”
