The entry deadline is March 31. Applications are available at www.lafcu.com/lafcumyway.

“Education is powerful,” said Kelli Ellsworth Etchison, LAFCU chief marketing officer. “It can change a person’s life and strengthen a community. LAFCU offers the Write to Educate Essay Contest to encourage high school students to pursue higher education.

“In addition, the charity donation aspect of the contest helps students develop the leadership skills of recognizing social needs and having empathy for others.”

Winners will be chosen based on their one-page essay in response to the questions: Why is diversity important? How can you embrace and promote diversity in college?

The winning essays will be published in the Lansing State Journal.

A donation of $500 will be made to the charity of each winner's choice of one of the following organizations:

•     Shiawassee Hope
