Burlington –  NorthCountry Federal Credit Union recently presented $10,000 to the United Way of Northwest Vermont’s Working Bridges Mobile Tax Preparation program. Working Bridges provides free tax assistance for low-to-moderate wage earners at their place of work in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, and the Vermont State Tax Department. Working Bridges strategies also include onsite resource coordination, income advance loans, and financial education and coaching.

“NorthCountry is already involved in Working Bridges through our Income Advance Employee Loan program,” stated Bob Morgan, CEO of NorthCountry. “It was just natural that we support the mobile tax service as well. The Working Bridges initiatives help employees maintain their employment by supporting them in their needs, some of them outside of the workday: a loan to cover expenses, financial literacy education, even doing taxes. We are pleased to be part of this beneficial program.”

Over the last seven years, utilization of Working Bridges mobile tax services has grown from serving 48 employees to over 200 per year at 10 different worksites. In 2018, 15 volunteers traveled to 10 different worksites with the support of a mobile tax coordinator.  The volunteers successfully completed 237 tax returns, resulting in $485,903 in federal and state refunds for Vermonters.

Working Bridges employer partners include: UVM Medical Center, Rhino Foods, Edlund Co, Wake Robin, UVM Custodial Services Department, Food Science Corp, Twincraft, and UVM Health Network Home Health and Hospice.

The mission of the United Way of Northwest Vermont is to build a stronger Northwest Vermont by mobilizing the community to improve people’s lives.

NorthCountry Federal Credit Union is open to anyone who lives or works in northern Vermont, and is headquartered in South Burlington. It provides financial services designed to provide convenience and value, and commits 10% of its previous year’s net revenue to community giving. It was organized in 1950, and is the third largest credit union in Vermont.
