(SAN ANTONIO, TX – February 6, 2019) –– The Security Service Charitable Foundation has presented $2,500 to the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind and Vision Impaired (SALBVI). These funds will support the blind children’s education program. The program provides training for blind or visually impaired children and their families with a focus on providing the tools necessary to gain independence and succeed in academic training.
For 85 years, SALBVI has been the area’s leading institution for training and educating the visually impaired community. Additionally, they are a manufacturing leader for government and military agencies. Through rehabilitation programs and employment opportunities in its assembly plant and military base store, SALBVI focuses on enriching the quality of these individuals’ lives.
“It is because of donations from partners like Security Service that we are able to serve over 4,400 visually impaired people in Bexar County and surrounding areas,” said Mike Gilliam, president and CEO for SALBVI. “Their support is allowing visually impaired children to learn valuable life skills that will help them succeed and be thriving, independent members of our community.”
The children’s education program focuses on nine areas: assistive technology, career education, compensatory skills, independent living skills, orientation and mobility skills, recreation and leisure, self-determination, sensory efficiency, and social interaction skills. In addition to these focus areas; the program is expanding to include training with community partners.
“This program provides invaluable training and life skills for children who are visually impaired,” said Brandy Ralston-Lint, senior vice president of corporate communications for Security Service Federal Credit Union. “We are honored to contribute to a program which will have a life-long impact on children and their families in our community.”
The Security Service Charitable Foundation helps further Security Service Federal Credit Union’s corporate goal of community service by contributing to deserving organizations and causes in the credit union's market areas.
