Truliant FCU Recognized for Financial Literacy and Social Responsibility Efforts

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Truliant Federal Credit Union was recently honored by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation (CCUF) with two 2018 state level awards.
Truliant received 1st Place state-level recognition for the Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award for North Carolina and South Carolina. The award was given in recognition of Truliant’s Financial Education Fund launched in 2016, which disperses grants annually. Additionally, Truliant won the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award for its Guilford County tornado relief response in April 2018. The awards were presented at a CCUF gala in Charlotte on Jan. 31.
“We thank the foundation for this wonderful honor recognizing Truliant’s financial literacy and community service outreach work,” said Atticus Simpson, director of community affairs and business partnership development at Truliant. “These awards recognize the lasting impact credit unions can have on communities by making corporate social responsibility a real priority.”
The Financial Education Fund was created by Truliant in 2016 in honor of reaching the 200,000 member milestone. The fund strengthens financial literacy for students in grades 6-12 by supplying up to $5,000 in Financial Education grants to public school teachers to incorporate financial education into their classroom curriculum.
As 1st Place state-level Desjardins and Maxwell award winners, Truliant will move on to national judging from the Credit Union National Association’s (CUNA) National Awards Program competition.
CUNA created the Desjardins program to recognize leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of financial literacy for all ages. The recognition program considers all activities supporting personal finance education, including, but not limited to, teaching using proprietary materials and curricula, as well as financial literacy leadership efforts.
CUNA created the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award to recognize social responsibility projects within the community. The award is given for external activities that help other people or strengthen the structure of a community.
On Sunday, April 15, 2018, a tornado touched down in east Greensboro, toppling trees and ripping apart homes and businesses, leaving a path of destruction more than 30 miles long, severely impacting the city and neighboring areas. Truliant, which has three branch locations in the Guilford County, donated $10,000 to the Guilford County Schools Classroom Tornado Relief Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. Additionally, Truliant partnered with WFMY #2Cares to purchase supplies to support neighborhood relief in the hardest hit parts of Greensboro, N.C.
