Credit Unions Make a Difference in Their Community
May 29, 2013
Three Topeka credit unions (Educational, Quest and New Century Credit Union) worked together to make a difference in their community by paying for lunch at two local coffee shops. Patrons of The Classic Bean and PTs Coffee were pleasantly surprised with a free lunch from a credit union representative. The credit unions coordinated with the local businesses as part of a collaborative, statewide effort by Kansas credit unions to make a difference in their communities. "This is a great way for us to illustrate the credit union philosophy of people helping people," said Michael Lindquist, Marketing Coordinator, New Century Credit Union.
"Sometimes the simplest gesture can brighten someones day, and were hoping it inspires the recipient to do the same for someone else," said Jennifer Kirmse, Vice President, Business Development, Educational Credit Union. Eleven Kansas credit unions in six communities participated in the event. Other Kansas locations include Emporia, Kansas City, Ness City, Norton and Wichita. Two thousand dollars were distributed at the Topeka events. "We see this as an opportunity for local credit unions and local businesses to work together and do something special for the community," said Valerie Taylor, Vice President, Business Development, Quest Credit Union.
This is the second in a series of "Make a Difference" events, which are part of the Kansas Credit Union Associations statewide awareness campaign. The first event, a gas giveaway held in six communities in October, 2012, distributed $15,000 to unsuspecting Kansans. A third event is being planned for October 2013.
