UW Credit Union Achieves Green Masters Status for Second Consecutive Year
January 8, 2019
Madison, Wis.— January 8, 2019 — For the second consecutive year, UW Credit Union has been named a Green Masters company by the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council. The designation recognizes businesses that are leading the way in an ongoing commitment to sustainability.
“We’re proud to once again be recognized for making sustainability a priority,” said Lee Wiersma, Executive Vice President & Chief Human Resources Officer at UW Credit Union. “We believe that minimizing our environmental impact benefits not only our environment, but our staff, our members, and our communities. The Green Masters program gives us a great way to measure our success and identify opportunities to improve our sustainability efforts.”
The Green Masters Program recognizes businesses across Wisconsin that have taken action within each of the nine pillars of sustainability, including energy and water savings, waste management, education, and governance. In 2018, UW Credit Union’s sustainability efforts scored 639 – well above the program average of 432.
At UW Credit Union, sustainability efforts include motion sensors and smart thermostats for energy savings, rain gardens, compost bins, regular trash audits, and community-focused initiatives spearheaded by the Green Team – like Adopt-a-Highway cleanups, Shred-it recycling events, and Earth Month recycling drives.
“Our Green Team initially chose to participate in the Green Masters Program as part of our MPower Champion project,” Wiersma said. “The Green Team is at the heart of keeping sustainability top of mind for our employees.”
