UW Credit Union Supports Financial Literacy Learning Opportunities in Their Community
October 15, 2018
Middleton, Wis. — Oct. 15, 2018 — The Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) selected UW Credit Union as a recipient of the Business Honor Roll Award for its partnership with the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District. Created by the WASB in 2012 to recognize local businesses that partner with Wisconsin school districts, the award honors businesses that offer innovative and inspiring learning opportunities and support to students, staff and their local communities.
Nineteen school districts selected 60 Wisconsin businesses for the 2018 Business Honor Roll award. UW Credit Union is one of five Madison-area businesses chosen for the award this year.
As a demonstration of its commitment to financial literacy, UW Credit Union opened its first high school branch at Middleton High School in 2018. “This collaboration has greatly enhanced our financial literacy instruction,” says Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District Community Relations/Education Foundation Specialist Perry Hibner.
Since the beginning of the partnership with the school district, UW Credit Union has selected six Middleton High School students as interns. Through the internship, students gain firsthand experience in branch operations, member service, personal finance and marketing. Interns also serve as tellers at the Middleton High School branch and the nearby Middleton Hills branch. In addition, interns work with UW Credit Union staff, participating in hands-on learning opportunities through presentations and outreach events.
"Preparing students for future financial success is an investment in our community," says UW Credit Union Director of Community Partnerships Jaimes Johnson. "Our commitment to the financial literacy curriculum at Middleton High School is one of many ways we help to support the financial well-being of our members."
Since the beginning of the partnership, UW Credit Union has presented more than 20 financial education seminars to nearly 300 students and staff at Middleton High School on topics ranging from responsible use of credit to saving and budgeting. In 2017, UW Credit Union delivered 288 financial education seminars to over 10,000 attendees across Wisconsin.
“The UW Credit Union partnership extends outreach to underrepresented students and families by providing scholarships to graduating seniors and offering convenient access to banking,” says Hibner. “Our nomination of UW Credit Union is a way for the school district to express our thanks. They have been a fantastic partner and we're excited to work even more closely in the future."
