Waterloo, Iowa (Oct. 8, 2018): An estimated 2,500 Iowans shredded more than 62,000 pounds of unwanted, sensitive documents at Veridian Credit Union’s Community Shred Day events across Iowa on Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. Mobile shred trucks from On-Site Information Destruction, Inc. were stationed at select Veridian branches in Ankeny, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo and West Des Moines.

“It’s the most-requested and best-attended event we host,” said Trina Becker, Veridian’s manager of loss prevention. “That shows people understand the importance of safely disposing sensitive documents, and we want to provide a free and convenient opportunity to do that.”

The shredded material will be recycled into commercial-grade paper towels, toilet paper and other paper products. Since the inaugural Community Shred Day in 2009, Veridian’s shred events have destroyed approximately 889,500 pounds of documents, saving more than 7,538 trees. The service is provided for free, saving attendees an estimated $100,000 since 2009.

Veridian Credit Union, founded in 1934 in Waterloo, Iowa, is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members.
