Kellogg Community Credit Union (KCCU) is hosting a Shred Day/Food Drive on September 29th, at two of their branches: 6427 Beckley Road North branch in Battle Creek; and 2925 Oakland Drive branch in the Oakwood Plaza, Kalamazoo. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and is free of charge. KCCU is asking members of the community to bring non-perishable food items in exchange for securely shredding their paper documents.

“At KCCU, we believe in making efforts to help conserve our natural resources, and we encourage our members to enroll in electronic services like eStatements, online banking, and bill pay. We also have shred bins in our branches so members can securely dispose of their personal documents,” stated Tracy Miller, KCCU’s CEO. “We also believe in helping members of the communities we serve who may be food insecure, so to be able to combine these two efforts in a Shred Day/Food Drive is a win-win!”

“Hunger is a daily reality for far too many of our friends and neighbors,” said Holly Cavinder, Communications Manager at the Food Bank of South Central Michigan. “But when we all work together, when we donate, volunteer, advocate and educate – like our friends at Kellogg Community Credit Union – we can truly make a difference in people’s lives.”

Items that you can bring to have securely shredded are paper documents including checks, and you do not have to remove staples or paper clips. Please do not bring cardboard boxes, plastic material, binders, wet materials (including paper), metal ring binders, or hard drives as they will not be able to shred those items. The shred truck will be leaving promptly at 11 a.m. so make sure you allow enough time for them to accommodate you. Once the trucks are full, they will leave, so first-come will be first-served. All non-perishable food items will be accepted, with 100% of the food collected will go to the Food Bank of South Central Michigan. They will then distribute the items to local food banks.

KCCU is pleased to report they have saved 213 trees in 2018 to date from utilizing the in-branch shred bins.
