RAPID CITY, S.D. – Black Hills Federal Credit Union is helping more than 10,000 students head back to school this August with the supplies they need for a successful school year.

Thanks to the generosity of credit union members, the community and area businesses, Black Hills Federal Credit Union distributed more than 100,000 supplies to area schools as part of their 22nd Annual School Supply Drive. The supplies will lessen the financial burden many families in the area face during the back-to-school time.

“We know the price and number of school supplies needed by each student makes it difficult for families on a tight budget to send their children back to school properly prepared,” said Heidi Bulman, community development officer at BHFCU. “The School Supply Drive is making it possible for students in approximately 60 area schools in 14 South Dakota communities to start the school year with the self-esteem and tools they need to be successful.”

Over the past few weeks, BHFCU collected everything from pencils, pens and backpacks, to compasses and crayons for the annual Drive. Carol Brown, vice president of marketing and business development at BHFCU, said the credit union’s employees dedicate countless hours to sorting and packaging those supplies based on each school’s need.

“BHFCU has been dedicated to the School Supply Drive for 22 years and we plan on doing it for many years to come,” Brown said. “We have a vested interest in helping children reach their goals and become the leaders of our community in the future.”

Representatives from area schools were on hand to collect their school’s individual supplies during BHFCU’s “Load the Bus” celebration on Friday. Teachers will distribute those supplies as students head back to school.
