(DENVER, CO – AUGUST 9, 2018) Security Service Charitable Foundation has donated $2,500 to The Healthy Me Project (THMP), which is dedicated to offering programs and education that inspire people of all abilities to embrace a healthy lifestyle.
This grant will help improve the quality of life for athletes with developmental disabilities in Denver and southern Colorado as they become healthier through exercise and nutrition while receiving mentorship in learning valuable life skills. This is especially important as an estimated 4.6 million Americans have an intellectual or developmental disability. Of that amount, more than 340,000 have Down Syndrome. Among Americans with Down Syndrome, an estimated 96 percent of adult women and 71 percent of adult men are obese or overweight. Men and women with developmental disabilities have a propensity for hypertonia, hypotonia, diabetes, gross motor difficulties, and heart disease. Obesity only exacerbates these risks.
“The Healthy Me Project has been able to help people with developmental disabilities live a more fulfilled and accomplished life,” said Roberta Whitney Hughes, executive director for The Healthy Me Project. “Through fitness and nutrition, participants have seen an increase in health, social skills and finding employment while also witnessing a decrease in social and environmental fears.”
“Serving one another, especially those who are unable to care for themselves, is one of the most important things we can do as individuals and an organization,” said Derrick Aguilar, senior vice president of member service for Security Service Federal Credit Union – Mountain Region. “The Healthy Me Project has set a tremendous example of dedication in this realm and we are honored to present them with $2,500 to enhance the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities.”
