Hanscom FCU Honors Local Veteran as Hero Among Us

Hanscom AFB, MA (July 30, 2018) — Hanscom Federal Credit Union has named Henry Benson, a retired U.S. Army veteran, as its second Heroes Among Us honoree in 2018.
Benson was honored at the Lowell Spinners Game against the Hudson Valley Renegades on July 26, where he engaged in some batting practice, threw out the first pitch of the game, enjoyed some good food at The Home Plate BBQ, and watched the Spinners play from a prime spot at LeLacheur Park.
Benson, the son of a coal miner, joined the U.S. Army at age 16 during World War II to avoid following his father’s footsteps into the mines. His daughter Dotti McDermott said, “He loved it so much he stayed in for 22 years.” He then served during the Korean Conflict and completed two tours of Vietnam before retiring in 1968.
“After retirement, my father rarely talked about his military career publicly,” said McDermott. “He and our family suffered from the attitude of the time toward Vietnam.”
Benson, who is 88, is a proud patriot. He raises and lowers the American flag daily at his Tewksbury, MA, home and has continued his commitment to service by volunteering in various community projects throughout the years.
“When we read about Henry Benson’s military service and commitment to his country, we knew we had a genuine hero to honor,” said Paul Marotta, Hanscom FCU’s Chairman of the Board. “This is just a small token of appreciation for his many years of dedicated service.”
