NorthCountry FCU Awards $1,000 Grant to Burlington Summer Recreation & Nutrition Program
July 23, 2018
Burlington – For some Burlington children, the lack of access to school lunches during summer vacation can mean months of experiencing food insecurity. A recent grant of $1,000 from NorthCountry Federal Credit Union is helping the Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront (BPRW) address the issue by offering free daily lunches, evening snacks and dinners to children from low-income households. Supervised recreation activities such as field trips, gardening, and games are also provided. The program takes place at three of Burlington’s subsidized family developments and one city park.
“NorthCountry happily supports programs which help Vermonters with challenges in their everyday life,” says Bob Morgan, CEO of NorthCountry. “Children in this program receive free nutritional meals, enjoy field trips, and have fun while learning. Local families feel supported as their children are engaged in enriching experiences.”
The Recreation & Nutrition Program is a collaborative effort between BPRW, the Burlington Housing Authority, the Boys & Girls Club, the Champlain Housing Trust, and the Burlington School Food Project. BPRW provides staffing and logistical support to four of Burlington’s summer meal sites: Franklin Square Housing Development, Riverside Apartments, the South Meadow Apartments, and Roosevelt Park.
NorthCountry Federal Credit Union is open to anyone who lives or works in northern Vermont, and is headquartered in South Burlington. It provides financial services designed to provide convenience and value, and commits 10% of its previous year’s net revenue to community giving. It was organized in 1950, and is the third largest credit union in Vermont.
