Madison, Wis. — July 16, 2018 — UW Credit Union has awarded five $3,000 college scholarships to students as part of its Community Values Scholarship program. The program provides crucial financial assistance to students who make community service work a priority in addition to their studies.

“Helping students to further their education is one of our key initiatives,” says Paul Kundert, President and CEO of UW Credit Union. “This scholarship program applauds academically talented students for their dedication to help strengthen our community. We share their commitment to improve people’s lives.”

The five scholarship recipients, each attending a Wisconsin school in the fall, exemplify a real commitment to community through their volunteer efforts:

  1. Sean O’Brien, Edgewood College, worked on a state political campaign and served as a legislative intern for a Wisconsin representative.

  2. Erin Faella, UW-Madison, mentored elementary students, helping to prepare them for literacy exams through stories, play and guided activities.

  3. Chamanpreet Pangli, Madison College, addressed hunger by working in a community garden, preparing meals and collecting food for the local food pantry.

  4. Tenzin Samdup, Edgewood College, distributed food to people in need as an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.

  5. Carly Augustynowicz, UW-Green Bay, organized a fundraiser for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, then delivered the funds to a shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

“The caring work of these students creates positive and lasting change in our communities,” says Jaimes Johnson, UW Credit Union Director of Community Partnerships. “This scholarship recognizes both the academic achievements and humanitarian efforts of these students, while demonstrating UW Credit Union’s commitment to make our community a better place to live.”

Each of the five exceptional students chosen for the scholarship have a GPA of 3.0 or greater, are new or returning full-time undergraduates, will attend a UW-System school, Madison College or Edgewood College in the fall and are members of UW Credit Union, either individually or on a joint account with a parent or guardian. Each student shares the credit union’s commitment to the community through participation in service work and school activities, and wrote an essay describing their involvement and its impact.
