Upward Bound Seniors Awarded NorthCountry Federal Credit Union Scholarships
July 12, 2018
LYNDON STATE COLLEGE: The Upward Bound Program at Lyndon State College awarded more than $2,500 in scholarships to the senior class of 2018. All students who will matriculate to various colleges in the fall received a Scholarship funded by the NorthCountry Federal Credit Union to help support their transition into post-secondary education.
Upward Bound is one the federal TRIO educational opportunity programs funded through the United States Department of Education. The program is committed to providing modest income, first generation college bound students the academic background, college preparatory experiences and support needed to succeed in college immediately after high school. Each of these Upward Bound students spent six weeks of their summers as high school students living on the Lyndon State College campus, taking college preparatory courses, and volunteering in the community. Upward Bound students collectively volunteer over 3,500 hours of service in the Lyndonville and St. Johnsbury communities each summer.
The students will continue to receive support from the program for the next 6 years or until college graduation. Each student will be eligible for continued academic scholarships while in college – totaling more than $1,000, will be eligible to work with the program as mentors and tutor counselors, and will be invited to speak to current students.
NorthCountry Federal Credit Union has supported the programs’ moderate income college bounds students for more than 12 years and is committed to the community’s young people. NorthCountry’s grant program offers funding to non-profit organizations for events, programs and projects that provide individuals with the tools and opportunities they need to overcome challenges and become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community.
Lyndon State College Upward Bound works with 75 students in 8 area high schools who are dedicated to achieving their postsecondary dreams.
