(SAN ANTONIO, TX – JULY 11, 2018) –– The Security Service Charitable Foundation is helping children with special needs fulfill their dreams of playing sports by donating $5,000 to Kinetic Kids.  The non-profit organization was created in 2001 by two physical therapists who recognized there were no sports programs available for their patients with physical disabilities. This year, they are expecting to serve more than 5,100 children through 234 programs, aided by 2,400 adult volunteers and 64 staff.

“This $5,000 donation from Security Service is going to greatly improve the quality of life for thousands of children with special needs,” said Kacey Wernli, co-executive director for Kinetic Kids. “It’s going to help us purchase new program equipment for boccia ball and goal ball programs, basketball equipment, art supplies and other items which will be used throughout the various sports programs; bringing joy and accessibility to those who need it most.”

The Kinetic Kids programs serve children ages 18 months to 18 years in Bexar, Comal and Kendall Counties. These children are persevering through physical and/or intellectual disabilities including, but not limited to: cerebral palsy, spina bifida, down syndrome, autism, brain tumors, childhood cancers, developmental delays, and other neurological disorders. Kinetic Kids also brings educational awareness to 2,250 children without disabilities annually to encourage understanding and integration.

“All children deserve access to sports and fine arts activities,” said Aaron Leek, board member for Kinetic Kids and senior vice president of operations for Security Service Federal Credit Union. “Security Service is proud to help Kinetic Kids make this a reality for children who have special obstacles to overcome and would otherwise be excluded.”

Kinetic Kids offers a wide variety of programs for children with many different diagnoses. All programs are designed and taught by pediatric physical and occupational therapists experienced with the abilities of the special needs child, thus providing a safe environment for children to enjoy their favorite sport. Classes are customized to meet the physical and developmental needs of children with a wide variety of disabilities and children with all levels of mobility (walkers, crutches, wheelchairs) are welcomed. These children wish to acquire skills like catching a ball or walking on a balance beam, rather than simply being part of a team. The professional support provided by the therapists makes skill acquisition attainable, while children gain vital health and rehabilitative benefits.

The Security Service Charitable Foundation helps further Security Service Federal Credit Union’s corporate goal of community service by contributing to deserving organizations and causes in the credit union's market areas that better the community and help to improve the quality of life.
