Glendora, CA, June 11, 2018 - America’s Christian Credit Union (ACCU) is proud to announce the six culture-shaping and Kingdom-impacting students who will receive educational assistance from ACCU as the result of their successful applications to the credit union’s 2018 Scholarship Award program.

This year’s scholarship prompt celebrated the credit union’s “60 Strong” anniversary by asking students to share where and how they are building stronger communities, futures, finances, families, and ministries.  Scholarship eligibility was extended to students enrolled for continuing studies at a secondary educational institution for the 2018-2019 school year.  Honorees were selected based upon academic performance, community involvement, extracurricular activities, and quality of response to the application essay. The total value of the ACCU scholarships awarded is $15,000.

More than 100 applications were submitted this year, from across the country, and represented a diverse mix of backgrounds, educational pursuits, and servant leadership qualities. Six deserving students were ultimately selected as recipients of the 2018 America’s Christian Credit Union Scholarship Award.  These students will be awarded $2,500 each to be applied to their education at the college, university, seminary, graduate program, or vocational-technical school in which they are enrolled for the upcoming school year.

Here is the list of the 2018 scholarship award recipients and the educational institution of their attendance this fall.

  1. Amanda Nicoara, Western Governors University

  2. Amy Elzik, Hult International Business School

  3. Catherine Winner, Azusa Pacific University

  4. Kayla Cossins, MidAmerica Nazarene University

  5. Margaret Ginion, Rowan College at Burlington County

  6. Tyrell Thompson, Biola University

Scholarship award recipient Tyrell Thompson is currently in Guatemala, helping with cleanup efforts at a local children’s home after the devastation stemming from the recent eruption of the Fuego volcano. We are humbled by Tyrell’s efforts to help families in the midst of this tragedy, and we pray for safety and healing to all affected by this calamity.

Award recipient and summa cum laude graduate Amy Elzik will be representing the University of La Verne’s School of Business Honors Society in Italy this summer before she begins her International Business graduate program in the fall.  Amy recently stopped by ACCU’s Glendora office to pick up her check and was greeted by President/CEO Mendell L. Thompson.  As she received the check, a very enthusiastic Amy said, “It is an honor to be chosen out of so many deserving applicants. I can’t believe it!“  Amy has served as an Arabic to English translator in effort to help mitigate Syrian Refugee Crisis, local youth and worship leader, and on missions to Lebanon.  She plans to use the scholarship award in her studies to “bring hope and resources to the world’s most impoverished economies through working as a Global Resource Coordinator at World Vision.”

“Tyrell and Amy embody the outstanding character and leadership skills represented in this pool of ACCU Scholarship Award applicants,” said Thompson afterward. “We are so grateful to our entire membership whose support, participation and partnership have made possible our ability to provide these scholarships to these young entrepreneurs, community leaders, and mission-oriented students in advancing God's work around the world.”
