Stratford, CT – May 16, 2018  – Corporate partnerships are one way public schools are able to successfully implement specialized programs. For several years, Stratford schools have received contributions from Sikorsky Credit Union in an effort to bring financial literacy to students in Stratford. Recently, Sikorsky Credit Union donated a $1,000 mini-grant for a program aimed at kindergarten students.  Rather than just present a check, the Credit Union got involved in the lesson as well.

Sikorsky Credit Union’s grant went toward the purchase of a kit which teaches young learners about the basics of sharing, saving and spending.  To lead this lesson, the Credit Union chose three high school seniors from Stratford High who are a part of the Credit Union’s paid internship program.  There are 13 students across four area high schools in the internship program.  The interns created the entire lesson for kindergartners with some assistance from teachers and Credit Union staff.

The Credit Union interns made their presentations at Lordship Elementary School and Stratford Academy.  The Lordship Elementary School presentation was in the classroom of Vittoria Pillo.  Ms. Pillo commented about the project: “Thank you so much to Sikorsky Credit Union and your team of interns.  Learning about how to save, share, and spend will be much more fun for the kids now with these great tools to take home and use with their families!"  Dan Ruskin of Sikorsky Credit Union works closely with the intern team and added: “Every age benefits from developing good financial habits.  The interns did a fantastic job of doing that with two kindergarten classrooms and they did so while telling a story.  I am very proud of them.”

Throughout the spring, the Credit Union conducted financial literacy presentations, demonstrations and activities in multiple local communities including Ansonia, Danbury, Oxford, Seymour, Shelton and Stratford.
