Kevin Buckles, Chief Financial Officer for Northeast Community Credit Union presents the Helping Teachers Teach grant check to Prenthia Buckles, third grade teacher at Hunter Elementary School.

Buckles applied for the Helping Teachers Teach grant to help expand her classroom library to include more books for higher-level Accelerated Reader books. Through the AR program, students are required to take comprehension tests for the books they have read. Many of Buckles’ students have read all of the books available in their reading ranges. The grant will help her purchase 62 additional books for her library so students can have access to more challenging reading materials.

“Since my library is limited to the book I have on grade level, my students are not getting challenging reading materials,” Buckles said. “These 62 new books will help my students excel beyond their reading capability and continue to grow in reading.”

Northeast Community Credit Union awards $300 every month to a classroom to be utilized for classroom needs, classroom activities, and academic enrichment.  Helping Teachers Teach is open to teachers within Carter, Johnson, Unicoi, Sullivan and Washington counties that are members of Northeast Community Credit Union. Area teachers may become members at any NCCU location and can download the application at the credit union’s website:  www.BeMyCU.org.
