On Feb. 13, 2018, Advantage One Credit Union presented $500.00 to Elizabeth Iott, a teacher at Shumate Middle School in Gibraltar, MI. She qualified for the grant by taking part in Advantage One’s Banzai program, which brings financial literacy to students in the classroom. Teachers who actively participated in the program were invited to write a short essay stating what they would do with $500.00 for their classroom. All submissions were then voted on by a panel of Advantage One employees. Iott plans to use the funds to purchase new equipment that will assist her computer students with their class projects and narrated video presentations. Currently, there are not enough headsets with speakers and microphones for each of her students to utilize, which makes creating and presenting their projects difficult. Iott will be purchasing a full classroom set (32 units) of headphones so each student will have one to use.

“Last quarter students had to share a few headsets that I purchased with my own money, making the process of creating their videos unnecessarily long,” said Iott. Needless to say, she was very excited to receive the call from Advantage One’s Business Development Director, Jessica Workman, letting her know her essay was the winning submission.

Advantage One is proud to partner with local educators to bring financial literacy to the classroom. Adding the grants has helped to increase participation by teachers and has allowed Advantage One the opportunity to speak to even more students about finances.
