Zeal Credit Union Donates 250 Pairs of Gloves & Mittens
January 23, 2018
LIVONIA, Mich. (January 22, 2018) – Thanks to a team effort, Zeal Credit Union recently donated a total of 250 pairs of new gloves and mittens to Mittens for Detroit, a nonprofit organization that provides to those in need during the cold winter months to help warm the hands and hearts of children and adults in metro Detroit.
More than 150 pairs of gloves and mittens were collected over the holidays as admission to the credit union’s annual Rock Star Savers skating party for youth members and their families. For each donation, skaters received free skating, free skate rental, pizza and pop at Riverside Arena in Livonia.
“The skating party is a great opportunity for us to give back to our youth members. Also, by donating to Mittens for Detroit, these youngsters have a chance to give back to their community,” said Tiffany Sweet, youth and community development coordinator for Zeal Credit Union. “Our youth savings and financial education programs are designed to make saving fun and to help them grow into financially responsible and caring adults. Giving back is part of that.”
Another 100 pairs of mittens and gloves were collected by Zeal staff in the operations and loss prevention departments as part of the credit union’s “Zeal The Love” holiday charity initiative. Mittens for Detroit was among 21 charities selected this year by Zeal’s 26 departments and branch offices.
“We are so honored that the teams at Zeal Credit Union chose to help Mittens for Detroit this year. These warm mittens and gloves will be on the hands of children and adults in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park later this month,” said Wendy Shepherd, executive director of Mittens for Detroit, who visited Zeal headquarters to receive the mitten donation along with a check for $200 to benefit the organization. “This is a great example of how Zeal Credit Union is involved in our community, and how Zeal is making a difference.”
“Seeing the smiles on the faces of families at the skating party and knowing the smiles these gloves will bring to those in need in our community makes our participation all worth it,” added Sweet. “We are grateful for the generosity of our youth members and staff.”
