NCCU Partners with Kids Like Us Learning Center
January 4, 2018
Northeast Community Credit Union is partnering with the Kids Like Us Learning Center to help serve those with special needs in the region.
NCCU is sponsoring the Teen Room and the Cafe for the Kids Like Us Center. Through the Teen Room and Café, teens will learn socialization and occupational skills to help them in the future.
For the Teen Room, NCCU staff purchased an entertainment center including a TV and blue ray player, futons, stools, tablets and books along with other components to give the teens a space to relax and interact with one another.
NCCU donated items to the center through the employee-supported community fund. Throughout the year, employees voluntarily donate to the fund. At the end of the year, that money is then distributed back into the community to help families in need.
“We were more than happy to donate to this project,” NCCU President/CEO Teresa Arnold said. “Our employees have such generous and giving hearts, and their donations make a huge difference in the community.”
The Teen Room will also serve as a hub for the young adults to work on their future community service projects. Lyons said there are many efforts planned for the teens to pursue, such as volunteering and making lap quilts for local nursing homes.
Through the café, the teens will learn life skills such as planning a menu, cooking, shopping and serving the meal. The teens will role play working in a restaurant at the café. They will plan their menus, shop at the in-center grocery store, “purchase” items and then prepare the meal. After the meal is complete, they will serve the meal to their peers. At the end of the 8-week course, their family members will attend a meal prepared and served by the center clients.
