Since the credit union motto is “People Helping People,” Hometown Credit Union in Ashley, ND and McIntosh County Social Services work together every year to create a “Mitten Giving Tree” at the credit union office. The social services office reaches out to families in McIntosh County to apply for this event in order to receive donated Christmas gifts for their children. Social Services then gives Hometown Credit Union an anonymous list of the children’s wants and needs for Christmas. The employees at Hometown Credit Union write the gender, age, and specifically requested gifts on paper mittens, which are available to be picked up by community members. Gifts returned unwrapped by a given deadline, and Hometown Credit Union employees then wrap the gifts and deliver them to Social Services to disburse to the children.
