Westerly Community CU Offering Scholarships for 2018

The Westerly Community Credit Union announces they will be awarding $4500.00 in scholarships to area schools for the 2017/18 school year. They are sponsoring three college scholarships and one vocational scholarship for local area high schools: Chariho, Exeter-West Greenwich, Narragansett, Prout, South Kingstown, Stonington, Westerly, and Wheeler. The Westerly Community Credit Union scholarships are awarded one-time each in the amount of $1000.00. The Westerly Community Credit Union will also be awarding $500.00 through the Cooperative Credit Union Association College Scholarship Program. The deadline for these scholarships is March 9, 2018.
The Westerly Community Credit Union College Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating High School Senior who plans to attend a two or four-year college or university upon graduation. This one-time award of $1000.00 will be awarded to a graduating High School Senior with an interest in any area of study.
The Joseph N. Cugini Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating High School Senior who plans to attend a two or four-year college or university upon graduation. This one-time award of $1000.00 will be awarded to a graduating High School Senior with an interest in any area of study. This scholarship was established to honor the many years of dedicated service by Joseph N. Cugini to the Westerly Community Credit Union. After 40 years of service, Cugini retired as President/CEO and Chairperson of the Board of Directors. He is known for his work in the Credit Union movement: with the Credit Union National Association, the Rhode Island Credit Union League, and the World Council of Credit Unions. This scholarship honors his many accomplishments achieved during his tenure at the Credit Union.
The Robert M. Bewlay Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating High School Senior who plans to attend a two or four-year college or university upon graduation. This one-time award of $1000.00 will be awarded to a graduating High School Senior with an interest in any area of study. This scholarship was established to honor Robert M. Bewlay’s dedication and service to the Westerly Community Credit Union. As Vice President of the Credit Union for 35 years, Bewlay was instrumental in implementing the computer system and technology utilized by the Credit Union.
The Westerly Community Credit Union Vocational Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating High School Senior who plans to attend a locally recognized Vocation Credentialed Certificate Program upon graduation. This annual scholarship is a one-time award of $1000.00. A complete list of Credentialed Certified Programs can be found listed on the application. Architectural Draftsperson, Dental Office Manager, Network Technician, and Massage Therapy are a few examples.
The Westerly Community Credit Union is also proud to be a part of the Cooperative Credit Union Association College Scholarship Program. The Credit Union will submit the top three applications to the Cooperative Credit Union for final review and consideration for a $500 scholarship award. Applicants will be evaluated on a variety of criteria including the students’ academic performance, financial need, extracurricular activities, and the quality and content of an essay that addressed the applicant’s intended major field of study and career goals. Deadline: March 9, 2018.
