Waterloo, Iowa (November 21, 2017): Veridian Credit Union joined United Auto Workers Local 838 in Waterloo, Iowa to host the 36th annual Mike and Leona Adams Thanksgiving Dinner on Monday, Nov. 20. Volunteers prepared a traditional Thanksgiving feast at the UAW Local 838 Union Hall for 630 people. The Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging delivered an additional 353 dinners to its current Meals on Wheels recipients. In total, the event served a free meal to 983 people this year.

The event is named for its late founders. In 1982, Mike and Leona Adams saw friends and neighbors struggling to make ends meet after layoffs in their community. Mike was a member of the UAW Local 838 and a board member for what is now Veridian Credit Union. He and his wife Leona brought both organizations together to serve a free community meal.

“The Cedar Valley was fortunate to benefit from Mike and Leona’s service-oriented leadership,” said Veridian president and CEO Monte Berg. “We’re honored to follow their example and continue their legacy.”

Each dinner included turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, corn, dinner roll, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. The event also offered other free services, including a haircut from Clip Art Corner, blood pressure check from Cedar Valley Hospice and transportation from Cedar Falls, Evansdale or Waterloo by Metropolitan Transit Authority of Black Hawk County.

Other local contributors to the event include retirees of the UAW Local 838; the Women’s Auxiliary of UAW Local 838, A&P Food Equipment, Anderson Erickson Dairy, Cedar Valley Hospice, Clip Art Corner, Critchett’s Lowrey Organ Center, Martin Bros. Distributing Co., Inc., Metropolitan Transit Authority of Black Hawk County, Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging, Special Occasions Party and Event Rental and University Avenue Hy-Vee.
