On Friday, November 10th, City of Boston Credit Union CEO Dan Waltz and staff bundled up to join dozens of volunteers for Boston Mayor Walsh's Operation Thank a Vet (OTV) Program. Operation Thank a Vet just completed their third year of hitting the streets of Boston to personally thank Boston veterans.

Boston's Office of Veterans Services spearheads this amazing program by gathering volunteers once a month to canvas neighborhoods in the City to knock on veterans' doors. To date OTV has reached out to over 3,000 veterans, seeking to reach Mayor Walsh's goal of contacting all 22,000 veterans within the City of Boston.

Volunteers are sent out in teams with packets containing a thank you letter from Mayor Walsh and Veterans Services Commissioner Giselle Sterling, plus pamphlets on services veterans qualify for but don't necessarily know is available. When communication is made with a veteran they are also awarded with a custom challenge coin from Mayor Walsh.  The challenge coin has a long-standing significance in all branches of the service as a commendation from a commanding officer for a job well done.

The City of Boston Credit Union OTV team knocked on the doors of 22 veterans and had the pleasure of thanking several veterans for their service to our country. It was a moving and incredibly uplifting day that began with a cake for the United States Marine Corp, who were celebrating their 242nd birthday. Word is sure to spread among City of Boston Credit Union staff and members about how fulfilling it was to be part of this ongoing program to honor our veterans.
