ST. JOSEPH, Mich. – United Federal Credit Union (UFCU) presented four $1,000 checks to Washoe County schools recently to bolster curriculum and advance technology.

The donations stem from a UFCU sweepstakes for free balloon rides held during the Great Reno Balloon Race in September. For every sweepstakes entry, the credit union decided to donate $1 to a local organization. Washoe County schools were chosen to be the recipients.

“We have a close partnership with the Washoe County School District and are always looking for new ways to support our community,” said Nevada Market Vice President Danny DeLaRosa. “We believe when we support our schools, we are investing in our future.”

Schools receiving the donations were Galena High School, Reno; Peavine Elementary School, Reno; Yvonne Shaw Middle School, Sparks, Nevada; and Spanish Springs High School, Sparks, Nevada.

“We plan to use the money to help purchase much needed electronic devices for our students such as iPads,” said Principal Tom Brown, Galena High School. “The donation will go a long way toward helping our students access technology in the classroom.”

“We are very appreciative of the gift,” said Principal Alan Holmes, Peavine Elementary School. “We will use the funds to purchase hands-on science kits that will align with our next generation science standards curriculum requirement.”

“We are so grateful for our partnership with United Federal Credit Union,” said Principal Gina Leonhard, Yvonne Shaw Middle School. “We are looking forward to spending the money to support our advancement of technology to help students become 21st Century Learners.”

“For a school our size, communication with our community is imperative,” said Assistant Principal Jason Urmston, Spanish Springs High School. “This donation is a huge step towards getting our digital marquis to make sure we have a consistent way of communicating important events, announcing special achievements and informing our community of critical information.”

The checks were presented to the schools in early November.
