Christian Community CU Donates $20,000 for Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts
September 6, 2017
In response to the devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey, Christian Community Credit Union is donating $20,000 to various organizations to help with disaster relief efforts. In partnership with American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA), the Credit Union donated $10,000 through the Christian relief organization One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS). A matching donation up to a total of $5,000 was offered to American Baptist Men-USA (ABMen). The National Credit Union Foundation’s CU Aid program received $2,500. The Credit Union also gave its employees an opportunity to help Hurricane Harvey victims with a matching donation of up to a total of $2,500 for OGHS.
The funds for the donations come from the Credit Union’s “Cards That Give to Missions” program, in which a portion of the Credit Union’s interchange income (fees merchants pay to card issuers) is donated when cardholders use their Credit Union-issued credit cards for purchases.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people and communities devastated by Hurricane Harvey,” said David Estridge, Christian Community Credit Union Interim CEO. “We’re proud to partner with ABCUSA, ABMen, and the National Credit Union Foundation as they work with local organizations to bring help and hope to those affected by the flooding.”
ABMen will work with North American Baptist Fellowship and the Texas Baptist Men with long-term disaster recovery efforts. Their support includes sending teams as resources for labor, chainsaw and debris removal, mud-out services, and rebuilding.
“We are genuinely overwhelmed with the support of Christian Community Credit Union’s matching fund offer,” said Bob Slechta, President of ABMen-USA. “Many financial gifts have already been committed as a result of their generous offer. I offer my humble ‘thank you’ for allowing us this incredible opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus as we minister to the victims of Hurricane Harvey.”
National Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Gigi Hyland said, “Your gift will empower heroic credit union members, employees, and volunteers to cope with personal losses and emotional trauma by providing critical services that will rebuild the lives of members in the disaster area.”
