Pawtucket Credit Union (PCU), Pawtucket, RI, has sponsored the "Rhode Island Back to School Celebration," an event created by community volunteers to provide children with back-to-school basics and other resources as they head back to the classroom.

National surveys report that 91% of teachers use their own money to provide their students with school supplies. On Aug. 19, thanks to PCU's generosity and with the efforts of employees and volunteers, free backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to more than 14,000 students at 12 different sites across the state.

"This year I witnessed firsthand what it takes to make this day happen. Along with many community volunteers, and a team of PCU employees, we helped to get backpacks filled and ready for distribution," said PCU President and CEO George Charette. "This experience reminds us of the importance of creating and improving educational opportunities for all by helping to put these critical resources in the hands of those in need."
