Rural America Initiatives (RAI), a long-standing non-profit organization serving Native American families in Rapid City, is pleased to announce that they have received a commitment of $50,000 over five years from Black Hills Federal Credit Union for their capital campaign to replace 20 year-old worn- out and fully depreciated Head Start and Early Head Start buildings. This donation will be used to meet a $500,000 challenge grant from an anonymous donor.

“Black Hills Federal Credit Union is such a generous community partner and advocate for at-risk children and families like ours. We are so grateful for their vote of confidence in our work. We could not realize this vision without their support, and we are deeply thankful” said RAI’s Executive Director Bruce Long Fox.

This gift helps to bring RAI’s Capital Campaign close to $1.5 million of meeting its goal. Construction on the new facility is expected to begin this fall.

Rural America Initiatives (RAI) has successfully provided critical services for the most at-risk Native American children and their families since 1986. RAI’s early childhood education programs are currently held in modular and trailer buildings that were designed to last 10-12 years. They have now been in use for over twenty years.

“RAI’s Head Start and Ateyapi programs have made great strides in improving the lives of our youth and impacting the strength of our community. We are proud to support their vision and ongoing commitment to youth education,” said Roger Heacock, President and CEO of Black Hills Federal Credit Union.

Established in Rapid City in 1941, Black Hills Federal Credit Union is a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative serving more than 65,000 members. The community-chartered credit union has locations in Rapid City, Custer, Eagle Butte, Hot Springs, Pierre, Sioux Falls, Spearfish, Sturgis and Wall, South Dakota.
