Rapid City, S.D.  –  As part of Feeding South Dakota’s Annual Canstruction contest, Black Hills Federal Credit Union employees spent nearly four hours assembling a ‘Hungry Hippo’ out of more than 1,470 cans and non-perishable goods at the Rushmore Mall in Rapid City this April.

The citywide competition challenged local businesses and organization to create the most unique structure, collect the most food and organize the most balanced meal out of their structure. At the event’s conclusion, BHFCU and participating organization donated all of their cans and non-perishable goods to Feeding South Dakota.

“This was a fun and competitive way to get many of the businesses and people here in town involved with Feeding South Dakota,” said Anna Snelling, chair of BHFCU’s Feeding South Dakota Community Action Team Project. “It was amazing to see people’s creativity being put to use for such a great organization and cause.”

During the contest’s awards ceremony last weekend, Feeding South Dakota presented BHFCU’s employees with the Structural Integrity Award and People’s Choice Awards for their ‘Hungry Hippo’.

BHFCU employees and members also raised $1,064 and collected hundreds of items and articles of clothing for area domestic violence centers, donated $1,315 to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life – Pennington County and provided $500 to the YMCA of Rapid City’s youth scholarship program.

With support from its members, BHFCU’s employee-led Community Action Team contributes and volunteers with more than 50 local, charitable organizations throughout the year.
