ST. PAUL, Minn. –  Affinity Plus awarded a University of Minnesota student a $200 Visa gift card and additional cash in early May, simply for taking part in Learn to Earn, a new virtual program that provides financial education to student members.

Kathleen, the Visa gift card winner, was chosen randomly among 75 University of Minnesota-Twin Cities students who successfully completed an experience that included short videos, recaps and quizzes.

Affinity Plus and the Affinity Plus Foundation piloted the program with the University of Minnesota to find out how students connected with financial education delivered virtually on computers or their mobile devices, according to Stephanie Musgrove, certified financial educator and business development specialist.

“Kathleen told us she participated in Learn to Earn because she wanted to know more about credit cards, and we covered that information in the virtual courses,” Musgrove said. “Even better, that experience encouraged her to have a conversation with Affinity Plus about her financial goals and how she wants to start building credit.”

That’s where the real value of Learn to Earn lies, she said, noting that Kathleen’s experience “showcases the value of education and meeting our members where they’re at. Kathleen had questions about credit cards. We gave her an easy, fun opportunity to learn more. She’s now a little more confident about building her credit, knowing Affinity Plus will work with her as she works toward her personal and financial goals.”

Musgrove said Affinity Plus and the Affinity Plus Foundation anticipate they will offer the program again to University of Minnesota student members in the fall.
