Rapid City, S.D. - Working to advance language and cultural education opportunities on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, Black Hills Federal Credit Union recently pledged to give $1,500 to be dispersed over the next three years to the Dupree School District’s Lakota Club.
The student-organized club provides kids in first through twelfth grade with much needed opportunities to participate in after-school activities focused on the Lakota culture, including learning the language, singing, hand games, beading, and much more. BHFCU’s donation will help to ensure the club continues to remain active for many years to come.
“It’s inspiring to see the efforts being made by these students to learn more about their cultural heritage and traditions, as well as family and community values,” said Robyn Miller, Manager of BHFCU’s Cheyenne River Member Service Center. “At BHFCU, we’re proud to support unique cultural experiences in our communities that encourage student success and promote our mission to Improve Lives.”
Students established the Lakota Club in December of 2016, after nearly four years without a Lakota language and cultural teacher in the Dupree School District. Dedicated volunteers from the community organize and lead many of the after-school activities.
