Credit Unions Helping to Provide a Bed for Every Child
March 23, 2017
Leaders from nine CCUA member credit unions and East Boston Savings Bank will strap on their tool belts tomorrow, March 24, for a friendly competition to determine which team can build the most beds for children in a two-hour time frame. This Build-A-Bed Challenge is an effort to raise awareness for "A Bed for Every Child," an initiative of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.
And while it promises to be a light-hearted event, it's also an important one. Nearly one in seven children in Massachusetts is growing up in poverty. Studies have shown that the lack of a good night sleep plays a negative role in a child's development and education. A bed is one of the tools that can help to give a child a good night's sleep. "A Bed for Every Child" distributes new twin beds to children throughout Massachusetts who do not have one of their own. More than 4,000 beds have been distributed since the program's inception.
The teams have their work cut out for them. The task before them is to "build" as many complete beds as possible, from bed frame to linens.
Making up the CCUA team will be officials from the Massachusetts Credit Unions Social Responsibility Committee: Hanscom Federal Credit Union, Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union, MassMutual Federal Credit Union, Metro Credit Union, Naveo Credit Union, RTN Federal Credit Union, St. Jean's Credit Union, UMassFive College Federal Credit Union, and Workers Credit Union.
The event takes place at 10 am at the coalition's Lynn, Mass. headquarters.
Who will be the victor? Look for the results and in Monday's Daily CU Scan.
