MIDLAND, MICHIGAN, March 8, 2017 – During a recent staff in-service at Dow Chemical Employees’ Credit Union, 140 DCECU employees worked together to assemble nearly 200 care packages and make dozens of pet toys to benefit organizations serving Midland, Bay and Isabella counties.

In advance of the Presidents Day in-service, employees donated $780 in cash to purchase supplies and contributed 500 items to help with the creation of the care packages. They also brought in stacks of old towels for use in making the pet toys.

Projects included:

  • Hope and care totes for Good Samaritan Rescue Mission – Approximately 50 packages, each containing socks and numerous personal-care supplies – including toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, soap, and hairbrushes or combs – were assembled for distribution to homeless individuals served by the Bay City mission.
  • Cancer kits for Cancer Services of Midland – For local cancer patients, 50 packages were assembled. Each contained a blanket or a heat pack, socks or slippers, personal care items, candy, and an entertainment item such as a movie.
  • Pet adoption bags and toys for the Humane Society of Midland County and Isabella County Animal Control & Shelter – Approximately 100 handmade pet toys, 48 cat adoption bags and 48 dog adoption bags were divided between the two organizations. Each bag contained two cans of wet food and a bag of treats.

“DCECU’s employees really pulled together to make this in-service a tremendous success,” said DCECU President/CEO Dennis Hanson. “From donating funds and items for the care packages to assembling the packages and making the pet toys to hand-writing notes to the recipients of the packages – sometimes with tears in their eyes – our staff members provided ample reminders of how much we all care for our community.”

Hanson said the in-service projects were a reflection of the credit union’s commitment to giving back.

“Whether we are sharing our success as an institution by giving back a percentage of our profits to our members in the form of rebates and rewards, or we are pooling our individual resources and talents to help the broader community, giving back is an essential part of DCECU’s culture,” he said.

DCECU employees regularly participate in service activities, including Adopt-A-Highway cleanups and Habitat for Humanity builds and neighborhood revitalization projects. In addition, regularly scheduled Jeans Day for Charity events organized by credit union employees raise funds for a variety of charitable organizations serving the Great Lakes Bay Region and beyond.
