Great Lakes Credit Union Adopts Turtle Friend
February 16, 2017
Bannockburn (IL) – Great Lakes Credit Union (GLCU) is excited to announce it has adopted a new friend, Myrtle the Turtle! Myrtle is part of Lake County Forest Preserves’ Blanding’s Turtle Recovery Program. As a corporate sponsor, GLCU will receive regular status updates on Myrtle the Turtle’s overall health.
One of GLCU’s core beliefs is to be knowledgeable and respectful, not only to members but in every aspect, including the environment. Knowing the Lake County Forest Preserves makes the environment and surrounding communities their top priority is why GLCU is so excited for this partnership!
The Blanding’s Turtle Recovery Program started after Illinois listed the Blanding’s turtles as endangered in 2009. The Lake County Forest Preserves could not stand by and watch these turtles disappear, so they took action. Since then, the recovery program has implemented several strategies to help the turtles make a strong comeback, including:
- Tracking turtles to determine the extent of their range and monitor their locations
- Working to increase juvenile survival through “head-starting,” a process by which turtle eggs are collected and incubated and hatchlings are then cared for in captivity until they reach a less vulnerable size
- Working with partners, such as the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on strategies to protect the species across boundaries
